Simple Organic Solutions LLC. My educational background is in the field of analytical chemistry with extensive experience in the application of this knowledge to the problems of the fruit and juice industry. I have a BS in chemistry from CalTech and an MS in biochemistry from Oregon State University. I am a principal in Simple Organic Solutions LLC, a consulting group that assists industry with meeting the USDA National Organic Program regulations as well as other natural and organic labeling requirements. I have worked with the organic industry as a technical expert in the area of processing for over 15 years. I am currently the board chair of the International Organic Inspectors Association. This is the professional organization for organic inspectors. I am an organic processing plant inspector. I have been involved in organic cosmetic regulations for a number of years, most recently as co-chair of the NSF/ANSI task group that recently published the NSF 305 Contains Organic Ingredients Standard. My technical knowledge of food chemistry and the processing industry plus long-standing interests in health, nutrition, and organics gives me a unique and valuable perspective on how chemistry can be applied to the improvement of fruits and juices.

Melinda Hemmelgarn, M.S., R.D. is a registered dietitian, and national award-winning freelance writer and speaker with 30 years’ experience in clinical, academic and public health nutrition. Her “Food Sleuth” newspaper columns, radio show, and conference keynotes help people "think beyond their plates." A former Food and Society Policy Fellow, Melinda promotes "food system literacy," and helps consumers connect the dots between food, health and agriculture. She and her photographer husband received the MO Department of Agriculture's Farmer's Market Champion Award for their 2009 Farm Hands Calendar: A Tribute to the Hands that Feed Us. Marne Coit is a consultant on issues relating to food and agricultural law and policy. Her research areas include sustainable agriculture, local food systems, food policy councils, agritourism, risk management, contract issues, and food safety. She received her J.D. and M.S.E.L. from Vermont Law School and her LL.M. in Agricultural Law from the University of Arkansas School of Law, and has been admitted to the Vermont and Arkansas Bars. Marne is a founding member of the Arkansas Food Policy Council, and also sits on the Board of Directors of Apple Seeds, Inc.

Ib Hagsten, Ph.D., combines nine years of hands-on farming in five countries with advanced degrees in agronomy and animal science, with specialties in nutrition, production and management. A Certified Agricultural Consultant, he has long been an advocate for low-input, sustainable agriculture and compassionate animal husbandry practices. He is an auditor for animal welfare audits of all species of production livestock. As an independent consultant, he has conducted: (1) international consulting assessments of agribusinesses, feed mills, and livestock/crop operations on four continents; (2) environmental/odor auditing; (3) nutrient management (NMPs & CNMPs) and conservation plans, including the new “Transition to Organics”; and (4) more than 800 organic inspections, from two-acre produce to 35,000 acres of wheat; from six dairy cows to 2,500 beef; from slaughterhouses, feed mills and complicated food processing plants to retail stores, personal care manufacturers and grower groups. His organic consulting experiences include conversion of conventional poultry production to Fair Trade, free-range, organic egg production in Mexico; evaluating/implementing a comprehensive program, including irrigation, for organic vegetable, herb and fruit production; teaching Organics 101 for 2 weeks in Azerbaijan. He is ready to assist you in navigating the process towards creation of any organic system plan, according to NOP, JAS, EU or COR standards, or to provide training for your employees.
