July 30 Growing Community Gardens Workshop in St. Louis
Lincoln University Cooperative Extension (LUCE) in collaboration with the University of Missouri Extension (UME) and the Gateway Greening of St. Louis will offer a one-day workshop on “Growing Community Gardens” on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Lincoln University Urban Impact Center located at 9041 Riverview Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63117, beginning at 9:30 a.m. sharp. The workshop will focus on “organizing a community garden”, “growing garden crops sustainably”, “choosing native plants to attract pollinators and beneficial insects”, and “composting garden wastes”. This workshop will comprise of lectures, hands-on demonstrations, as well as a community garden tour. Although the target audience are the “trainers/educators”, all individuals interested in gardening are welcome to attend. Registration is required; the fee is $5 per person to cover partial costs of a light lunch and drink. The number of participants will be limited to 30; therefore, please register early to reserve your place. You are invited to join us in a presentation and discussion of the growing interest and demand in Mid-Missouri elderberries.

Andy Thomas from the Southwest Research Center will review recently published university trials and papers. Analysis of the results will be shared as how this pertains to the benefit of future regional growers.

Patrick Byers, University of Missouri Regional Horticulture Specialist for the southwest, will tell us about his recent trip to Quebec for the first ever North American Elderberry Summit.

A presentation will be given on the implementation and management of successfully growing future crops of elderberries.

A tour of Eridu Farms extensive elderberry orchard and commercial plantings will be included.
